Used computer not working with monitors?

I just got a used computer and when i start it up, the monitor says:

Frequency out of range:

95 KHz / 60 Hz

Please change the display mode to

1280 x 1024 with 60Hz

So...Is there anything i can do? I don't see how I could change the display settings without having a monitor to display it with. I've tried starting it with two different monitors, and neither work.Used computer not working with monitors?
Start the machine in safe mode by pressing F8 several times before Windows starts, and enable VGA mode. Then change the video resolution.

Minimize any open windows, then right click on the desktop wall paper. Properties, Settings:

Change the resolution to 1280x1024, then click, Advanced, Monitor: and change the refresh rate to 60Hz. Ok, Ok,

If that works on rebooting in normal mode, then you can try to up it to 72Hz to avoid flickering. It will be easier on your eyes.
